Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos breaks record with 19th red card in La Liga

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos broke the La Liga record for the most career red cards as he was sent off for the 19th time in league play on Saturday.

Ramos had already been booked when he was shown a second yellow for elbowing Aritz Aduriz in the 86th minute at San Mames.

He broke the record held by Pablo Alfaro and Xavi Aguado, both of whom were dismissed 18 times in their careers. It was Ramos' first red card since he matched the record in August.

At just 31 years old, Ramos has already been sent off 24 times in his career in all competitions -- twice as many as the next player in Real Madrid history, Fernando Hierro with 12.

Ramos, who wore a face mask after breaking his nose against Atletico Madrid two weeks ago, is now set to be suspended for next Saturday's home La Liga game against fifth placed Sevilla,

However, Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane hinted at a possible appeal from the Bernabeu hierarchy to try and avoid a ban.

"Ramos is not happy as he thinks he didn't make contract, that it was not a yellow," Zidane said.

Casemiro and Dani Carvajal are already set to miss the game against Sevilla after picking up their fifth bookings of the season against Athletic.

Madrid match delegate Chendo was also sent to the stands by referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz for protesting too loudly.
